For years, a lot of DC fans have been clamoring for the director's cut of 2016's Suicide Squad, especially after the success of Zack Snyder's Justice League and David Ayer's stories about the changes that the studio did to his film and how it differed from his original vision.

So far, unlike the Snyder movie, it looks like we are still far from it becoming a reality as the management at Warner Bros. and Max have not responded or expressed interest to release Ayer's original cut of the film.

Nevertheless, both Ayer and the fans are still persistent in petitioning for its release and they are continuing to hope that the release will see the light of day to give the public the true version of the film.

Now, according to a recent update from Ayer, it sounds like we might still see his version get a release in the future thanks to one of the heads of DC Studios.

In a recent post on X, Ayer responded to another post that questioned the ongoing petition for his cut of Suicide Squad to get released.

He explained that he is aware that there are people who are mocking it, but he also iterated that there is a lot of "genuine" interest to see it happen.

"What’s your advice on how to navigate this situation with grace? There’s a genuine curiosity and interest from a lot of people. And I’m aware of there is another group of people that have fun mocking the film," he wrote.

"Your comment is a perfect example of how many are magnetically drawn discussion to the 2016 film in a negative way. Have you ever had an experience in life that didn’t until the way you wanted, that dragged you, that made you rethink everything? I have."

Ayer said that he is sure that his cut is "better" than the studio version and revealed that DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn that his cut will "have its time to be shared."

He added, "All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have its time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects."

This is certainly a surprising update surrounding the Ayer Cut's potential release as it looks like fans can still hope that it will get released at some point in the future and it's all up to Gunn to make a decision regarding it.

However, fans should still temper their expectations as the management of DC Studios is also busy working on the new DCU franchise and they might want to avoid meddling with the old projects to prevent further confusion for fans and the audience regarding the continuity and canon.

Suicide Squad is available to stream on Max.
