Stranger Things Actor Campaigns for The Legend of Zelda Movie

As time progresses, technology becomes more advanced, giving filmmakers and producers more ways to bring video game series to life. As we enter a new era of video games turned into films and TV series, with The Last of Us and The Super Mario Bros. Movie coming out soon, fans are in a position to demand more adaptations. Stranger Things' Gaten Matarazzo recently expressed interest in a film adaptation of the Legend of Zelda video game franchise.

“I’m a huge Legend of Zelda fan and I’ve always wanted to see a very visually and musically driven animated film,” the actor said to Variety. “It might be challenging when most of the characters never speak, but to explore a vocally silent world where a story can be told visually and through score would be really cool.”

The Legend of Zelda is a popular video game series launched in 1986. In a fictional world called Hyrule, a youthful commoner boy named Link goes on adventures to save a princess named Zelda from an evil character called Ganon. It was created by Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto, also the creator of Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, and Pikmin.

In addition to its protagonist, Link, who never speaks, there are many supporting characters. That's why Matarazzo's protest that it should be a "visually and musically driven animated film" is exactly the right way to execute an adaptation. The Legend of Zelda having a new adaptation has been rumored for years, but Nintendo has not yet announced anything of the sort. There were reports that a live-action television series was in the works last year, but Nintendo allegedly scrapped the idea after the information leaked in 2015.

Aside from portraying the fan favorite Dustin in Netflix's one of the most popular series, Stranger Things, Matarazzo is also known as a gaming enthusiast and big fan of the Pokémon anime series. With Stranger Things coming to an end after the fifth season, the actor is expected to have a slot in his acting resume, and expressing his enthusiasm for the adaptation might also be his way of saying he wants to star in it as well.
