Steven Spielberg Suggested a Female Lead for Bumblebee

There are two things that have circled the thoughts of those who have seen the Bumblebee trailer; Starscream looks accurate for once and the movie could actually be good. Focusing on a smaller story that seemingly has nothing to do with MacGuffins, it's definitely a breath of fresh air when compared to previous Transformers movies.

Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld was cast as the lead and from what we've seen in the trailer, she will probably do a good job. So it's interesting to note that Steven Spielberg, who produced a number of Michael Bay's Transformers films, was the one who suggested casting a female lead and that it was an idea he's had for a while.

Entertainment Weekly had an interview with Bumblebee producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who brought up how the Ready Player One director had an idea for a Bumblebee film with a female lead. They eventually went with the pitch to save the franchise since audiences seem fatigued with the franchise after The Last Knight disappointed in the box office.

"Steven had always had an idea that a young girl and Bumblebee would be a great combination, so we headed in that direction. When we were debating it, the idea of a young girl seemed to us to be a real change in our direction."

If this Transformers spin-off does well, we could see another one that stars Optimus Prime. Pretty much everyone knows the head Autobot these days, whether it's due to the films, the 80's animated series, or the number of toys that are still being made of him. Fans will have to see the film so that this can be a reality, so here is hoping that it's good.

Bumblebee hits theaters on December 21.
