Steve Martin Deletes Carrie Fisher Tweet After Online Backlash

Steve Martin removed a tweet intended to honor his longtime friend Carrie Fisher, who passed away Tuesday at 60, after people online pressured him to delete.

Shortly after Fisher died in a hospital on Tuesday, Martin tweeted, "When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She turned out to be witty and bright as well."

Martin's tweet talked about Fisher's appearance in a way that many would find offensive or even sexist, and crediting her for being "witty and bright" caused a lot of backlash.

Martin deleted the tweet a few hours after he posted it, which sparked some people to express how upset they were that Martin decided to respond to the criticisms in that way.

These days, it's almost impossible not to offend anyone online if you have a significant amount of audience who can openly criticize. While I can see how some people could see Martin's tweet as sexist, I don't think it's as bad as the Brazilian journalist's joke about Fisher's death or the distasteful Cinnabon tweet.
