Stephen Merchant Cast in Taika Waititi's Jojo Rabbit

Marvel fans may recognize Stephen Merchant best as Caliban from last year's Logan, but now Merchant has revealed that he's working on Taika Waititi's upcoming WWII comedy-drama, Jojo Rabbit.

Merchant shared this image of himself on Instagram:

According to Deadline, Merchant will be playing a Gestapo agent named Captain Deertz, and it's possible that his role is going to be a cameo appearance. Merchant is probably best known for his work on the comedy The Office, and I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Taika Waititi would want to collaborate with him.

Merchant will be the third Marvel actor added to the cast of Jojo Rabbit. The film already includes Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson as the mother of the protagonist, and Taika Waititi himself is set to play an imaginary version of Hitler.

Though WWII can be a sensitive subject, I trust the director of Thor: Ragnarok will be able to squeeze in some smiles and genuine heart in a movie set during the darkest eras of our history. Waititi after all is a master of happy/sad cinema.

Jojo Rabbit has no release date yet, but with the movie already shooting, we could see it come out sometime next year.
