Stephen King Lambasted for His Anti-Diversity Style in Voting for Oscars

It looks like prolific horror, supernatural fiction, suspense, and fantasy novelist Stephen King has managed to get himself into trouble online.

While the legendary writer is known to have left-leaning ideals, King just recently posted a series of twist revealing how he doesn't let diversity become a factor when he votes for the Oscars. King is part of the team that chooses the nominees and winners of the Academy Awards, and apparently, the writer wants to focus on quality instead of diversity when he votes.

"As a writer, I am allowed to nominate in just 3 categories: Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Screenplay. For me, the diversity issue--as it applies to individual actors and directors, anyway--did not come up. That said..." King tweeted. "...I would never consider diversity in matters of art. Only quality. It seems to me that to do otherwise would be wrong."

Still, this doesn't mean that King doesn't believe in equality. The writer continued the thread explaining that the most important thing for artists and creatives is to make sure that everyone has the same opportunities "regardless of sex, color, or orientation."

King's fans weren't too keen on King's voting style though, explaining that King has only been perpetuating the white privilege prevalent in the Academy Awards. There were some who understood his sentiment though, saying that creatives from minority groups would rather much be rewarded because their work was outstanding than be rewarded because of an agenda for diversity.

What do you think of King's voting style at the Oscars? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
