Star Wars: The Mandalorian Kept Taika Waititi In Line With A Tone Similar To Original Trilogy

It's going to be a busy year for Star Wars fans. Not only is Lucasfilm releasing the third and final installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy this December, but the Star Wars franchise is also getting its first ever live-action TV series, Star Wars: The Mandalorian. Now, with The Mandalorian on the way, episode director Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) hints that the tone for the show is going to honor the spirit of Star Wars' original trilogy.

Speaking with the press after a TCA event (via Slash Film), the indie filmmaking darling opened up about the upcoming Star Wars series, talking about what it was like to work on an episode of The Mandalorian.

"Star Wars is very different to Marvel style," Waititi admitted."They know that the tone of the first films really should be kind of adhered to. That's what the fans like and you can't really disrespect it, I guess is a nicer way of saying, 'Can't put too many jokes in.' There's a bit, definitely, my tone is in there, the dialogue and stuff like that."

This is interesting information. Marvel gave Waititi a whole lot of creative liberty working on Thor: Ragnarok. It looks like Lucasfilm didn't do the same, making the director work with the style set in by the franchise. Can't have a Star Wars series that's too quippy, can we? Sure, Star Wars might have its moments of levity, but it looks like The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau made sure that episode directors like Waititi wouldn't over do it.

For those who haven't been catching up with the news, The Mandalorian will follow the story of a lone Mandalorian warrior living in the outer rim.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian is set to premiere sometime this year.
