Star Wars: The High Republic Details Its 'Space Viking' Villains The Nihil

Star Wars: The High Republic has a lot of people excited, giving us an era of the franchise set 200 years before The Phantom Menace, giving these storytellers a lot of freedom. This is going to be the golden era of the Jedi but that doesn't mean they won't have anything to swing their lightsabers at. The High Republic will have a new set of villains called The Nihil, who will spin out of a big event called "The Great Disaster."

The Nihil has been described as "space Vikings," which is actually a pretty original concept for this franchise. While we've seen a few savage enemies here and there, seeing "space Vikings" should be pretty awesome, especially against these Jedis of the golden age. It's a pretty fun concept and the battles should be fantastic, especially in comic book form.

Charles Soule will be introducing these enemies in the novel Light of the Jedi. We're actually pretty shocked to see him work on a novel since he's mostly known for Star Wars comic books. He also teased that the whole saga will be built from The Great Disaster, which is pretty great to hear.

"You see a lot of Jedi coming together to handle it. How would the Jedi handle something galactically terrible on a moment's notice? That scene opens the novel and it goes from there…the whole [saga] builds from that."

Apparently, these villains will also be masters of hyperspace, which is going to make them a huge threat. This means that they could attack at any moment and that should lead to some intense battles.

Star Wars: The High Republic will debut this August.
