Star Wars: Simon Pegg Regrets Making Fun of Jar Jar Binks

Toxic fandom has been a popular term in geek culture recently, in no small part due to certain groups that take their love for these franchises a bit too far. Star Wars fans are a major part of this, thanks to a number of them driving away stars from social media platforms but they exist in Marvel, DC, and pretty much any form of entertainment.

Actor Simon Pegg now regrets seemingly taking part in toxic fandom, now feeling guilty for the jokes he made about polarizing Phantom Menace character Jar Jar Binks.

During an interview with Now This, Pegg revealed that he recently found out about Ahmed Best and his suicide attempt after fans hated his character in Star Wars: Episode 1. The Star Trek actor had previously admitted to hating the prequel trilogy and even made fun of the character a number of times. He now regrets doing that since it contributed to a man's mental struggle.

It is good seeing the actor show some sympathy towards the man who portrayed Jar Jar Binks. While it's fine to hate the character, reacting in violent ways isn't proper either, especially if it leads to someone contemplating on taking their life. There's just no excuse for that.

Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
