Star Wars Showrunner Dave Filoni on the Return to The Clone Wars

Star Wars: The Clone Wars is back with its seventh and final season.

Now that the first two episodes of season seven are out, Clone Wars executive producer Dave Filoni opens up about the return of the series. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Filoni opens up about The Clone Wars' return. The beloved Star Wars computer-animated series made its big debut on Cartoon Network in 2008 and the sixth season of the show last aired in 2014, making it six years since the last batch of episodes made its way to the small screen.

In the interview with Filoni, Entertainment Weekly asks what the showrunner wanted to bring back to The Clone Wars after its six-year-long gap. Naturally, the executive producer's first response is the look of the series.

"If you go back to the original series, what we put out in 2008, it's such a dramatic leap. But then you realize it's been 11 years since that show first aired, which is kind of striking for me that it's been so long," Filoni tells the entertainment news outlet, "So there should be dramatic improvements, visually. I think that facial animation, the fidelity of the expression — things like that — we were able to improve in the animation itself."

According to Filoni, the lengthy space of time between seasons allowed Lucasfilm to obtain the technology to make The Clone Wars look much better than it used to before.

"I really feel looking at this show now, it's kind of how George [Lucas] and I envisioned it to look in the beginning. We just didn't have the tools necessary to actually realize it then. But over time with a lot of training, you know, like any good Jedi I learned my way," the showrunner explained.

Apparently, Filoni learned a lot from directing episodes on the first season of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and the showrunner decided to apply a few of those things in the last season of The Clone Wars.

Like wine, it looks like the series has gotten better and better over time.
