It's no secret to a lot of fans that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the most polarizing entry in the sequel trilogy. While Episode VIII boasts an impressive box office revenue of $1.3 billion under its belt, the generally negative reception it ended up generating is just hard to ignore.
This led many to believe that Johnson's tenure in the franchise was a one-and-done scenario. Shockingly enough, Lucasfilm confirmed that the divisive filmmaker is returning to Star Wars to helm a new trilogy. However, it looks like Rian's next outing is plagued with major issues.
In an interview with Variety, the Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery director seemingly expressed his uncertainty regarding the real status of his next Star Wars venture. He said: "Making Star Wars was the high point of my life and so I still, I pray to God I'll be back there someday."
He did clarify that the project is still on the table but his packed schedule is preventing him from making his comeback to a galaxy far, far away. Johnson added: "I have talked to [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy] about it and we're still talking about it. I had such an amazing experience making The Last Jedi. It's entirely a matter of scheduling. For me, putting this [Glass Onion] out and making the next one of these [Knives Out sequels]… the answer is I don't know."

Given how stagnant the Star Wars film slate has become and also taking into consideration all the projects that were recently canned, it wouldn't be surprising if Lucasfilm also scraps Rian's upcoming trilogy. Personally, I'd still be down to seeing it come to fruition just so he can finally get the redemption he so rightfully deserves.
