Despite its critical acclaim and its financial success, Star Wars: The Last Jedi became one of the most divisive films in the Star Wars franchise, with many criticizing the film for its portrayal of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and for subverting fan expectations. However, while some fans take their time criticizing The Last Jedi for perceived misgivings, others have been busying themselves with the film's biggest ship: Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).
The popularity of the franchise's potential pair of star-crossed lovers in Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy has sky-rocketed ever since the release of The Last Jedi and thanks to Tumblr's year-end "fandometrics" we now see just how obsessed the fanbase is with "Reylo."
Accumulating data giving users information about the site's most popular fandoms and celebrities, Tumblr offers us the Top Ships of 2018, a list where the pairing between Rey and Kylo Ren ranked second on the site. While it might not come as much of a surprise to some, Reylo's ranking comes as a significant feat. Reylo was the only heterosexual couple to make its way in the top five of Tumblr's list of Top Ships of the year.
That's not all. The pairing is also doing pretty well on Fanfiction.net. There Reylo makes up 4.2% of the 50,000 fictional pieces written about Star Wars. That's a tad bit higher than what's being written for Han and Leia, a pairing which makes up 3.2% of the Star Wars fanfiction stories written on the site.
Now, with the popularity of Reylo skyrocketing, we have only one question left. What will become of the two when Star Wars: Episode IX comes around?
