Star Wars Resistance Could Overlap with the Timeline of The Force Awakens

Star Wars Rebels may have taken place a few years before A New Hope, but Resistance is set in a timeline a lot closer to The Force Awakens with a time difference of only six months. Head writer Brandon Auman talks about the show and explains why they decided to tell Kazuda Xiono's story so close to Rey's.

According to SYFY Wire, the timeline of Resistance may actually overlap with that of The Force Awakens. Auman explains that the timeline choice was for their target audience—the kids. Auman says:

"It's a little hard for the younger fans to wrap their heads around it if it was, say 15 years before The Force Awakens…Then it's a very nebulous timeline. You're kind of not sure. The fact that we've got Poe Dameron and BB-8 from the very beginning — kids and any fan of any age automatically just know... 'This is the new movies, this is where it's gonna take place,' so it's just easier. And it was just fun to kind of roll in and back up a little bit instead of just trying to follow exactly where the movies are at."

In the story, lead character Kaz is actually hired by the Resistance to spy on the rising threat of the First Order. Seeing that the FO succeed in destroying the New Republic in Force Awakens, I'm guessing this is going to be some kind of defining moment for Kaz, and the series will be about him trying to get over his guilt for not finding out about Starkiller Base soon enough.

Admittedly, a lot of fans have had a very sour reaction to the previews for Resistance and are bashing it for the choice in humor as well as animation style. What they forget is that the show's target is ultimately the kids and based on what I've seen, it's going to be a fun ride for a new generation of Star Wars fans.

Besides, people hated on Clone Wars and Rebels when they first came out but they all ended up being beloved by the fanbase by the time they ended. I have no doubts the same will happen for Resistance.

Star Wars Resistance premieres on Disney Channel Oct. 7.
