Star Wars Producer Explains How The Mandalorian Forges Its Identity Outside Boba Fett

Star Wars: The Mandalorian might have been a major success when it premiered in November last year, however, Jon Favreau and his team of writers had to overcome one particular hurdle before releasing the hit Star Wars series – making sure that Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) had his own identity far outside of Boba Fett.

Appearing in the virtual Contenders Television event by Deadline, series executive producer and writer-director Dave Filoni explains how Favreau's series forged Djarin's identity outside of Star Wars iconic Mandalorian bounty hunter.

According to the producer, there "wasn't really any crossover with any previous development," hinting that the series had no bearing with the much rumored Boba Fett standalone movie.

The idea for the series "really starts with Jon Favreau coming forward saying he'd like to develop a concept and talking with [Lucasfilm president] Kathleen Kennedy about it."

Favreau first pitched the idea to Kennedy, and then, the Lucasfilm head honcho decided to call up Filoni to have him assist the project.

"She knew I had done a lot of work with Mandalorian people and culture on Clone Wars with George over the years. She always knew that I knew Jon," Filoni continued. "She called me in when Jon pitched this idea, and he really loved the imagery of a lone gunman and Western. When we were kids, Boba Fett was a 'Man With No Name.' Even his publicity stills were evocative of the [Sergio Leone] Dollar trilogy."

Interestingly enough, The Mandalorian succeeded in establishing a Mandalorian warrior with an identity much different from Fetts. Sure, it might be difficult not to think of Boba Fett when seeing a Mandalorian, but honestly, Dinn Djarin stands well on his own.

We can't wait to see more of Mando's adventures with Baby Yoda when the series returns with its second season on Disney+.
