Star Wars’ Obi-Wan And Boba Fett Spinoffs Reportedly Scrapped By Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy might have recently gotten a three-year extension on her contract with the studio, however, it seems like spinoff projects like Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi haven't had the same kind of luck.

According to Express, new reports reveal that Lucasfilm has decided to hold back on the development of its spinoff projects. Sources say that that the studio's slate of films outside the main Star Wars saga had been decidedly flushed. This includes the long-rumored Boba Fett movie as well as the Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff – a standalone that had fans at the edge of their seat the moment it hit the rumor mill.

Obi-Wan might be a popular character, but it seems like Lucasfilm has decided to take its upcoming spinoff movies off the table after the poor performance of the Han Solo standalone, Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The film which premiered this year had $275 million for its production budget, making it one of the most expensive films ever made in Hollywood history. However, despite all the money spent on the project, Solo only managed to earn $392.8 million, losing Disney and Lucasfilm money.

However, while some would blame Solo's outcome on the backlash against Star Wars: The Last Jedi, analysts have said that the film's slow marketing was mostly to blame, and last week, Disney CEO Bob Iger admitted that Solo's box office numbers were mostly his fault.

Iger also announced that Lucasfilm was going to take a slowdown, allowing the studio's directors and their respective creative teams to take the time they need to work on their projects.

Lucasfilm's next movie, Star Wars: Episode IX, hits cinemas December 20, 2019.
