Star Wars: George Lucas on Princess Leia, and the Problem of Male Privilege

Kelly Marie Tran leaving Instagram has sparked online outrage within the Star Wars fanbase, and everyone in the community is currently trying to #ForceOutHate. George Lucas actually has a take on the toxic fandom, and says that the real problem really draws from "Male Privilege."

This quote from Lucas comes from James Cameron's mini-series Story of Science Fiction (via Phil Szostak):

Though some fans have pegged it as an "SJW agenda," Star Wars is now attempting to include more representation within the franchise what with three of the last four movies having female protagonists as well as more racially diverse main characters.

Though I do love the original trilogy, it's still admittedly a product of its time. Princess Leia is headstrong and tough for sure, but she never really gets to talk to any of the other female characters in the trilogy; and speaking of women characters, you can count all of them in one hand—besides Leia, you have Aunt Beru, Mon Mothma, and Oola the slave girl.

The prequel trilogy didn't even do any better either. Name me another main female character who isn't Padme Amidala.

Some people may think the representation is forced, but it's actually making a big difference for fans around the world. Hopefully some people could just see past that and enjoy the movies for what they are.
