Star Wars: Freddie Prinze Jr Speaks on Kanan Jarrus' Potential Live-Action Debut

For big comic book fans or fans of animated series from their favorite franchises, there is nothing more exciting than knowing one of your favorite characters will have an on-screen counterpart. Star Wars fans are looking forward to seeing some Star Wars Rebels characters, namely Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla, as they are set to make their live-action debuts in the upcoming Disney+ Ahsoka series. Freddie Prinze Jr., who voiced Kanan Jarrus in the 2014 animated saga, addressed if he has any interest in also playing the live-action version of the character.

“Kanana's story – at least for me – is done, I thought it ended beautifully. People cried, I was very happy about that. I don't mean that like a jerk: our goal was to make you cry. I didn't even want to do the little voice-over in the last Star Wars movie [The Rise of Skywalker]. I thought it felt forced.” Prinze told Comicbook.com

He continued, “To me, every time I'm asked to do Kanan it waters down what was a beautiful ending... It's this amazing powerful moment. So for me, that story's been told, and it's done, and I wouldn't have any interest in that. And it would be weird to play a different character in that universe, so I don't have any ambition to be in the Star Wars Universe.”

Prinze Jr. is referring to his brief voice cameo as Kanan near the end of The Rise of Skywalker when the Jedi who came before pushed Rey to fight back against the Emperor. Kanan was killed off in the final season, and while his spirit lives on as a Force ghost, it wouldn't make sense for the fan favorite to make a live-action appearance.

Kanan Jarrus was a Jedi padawan who survived Order 66 and was convinced to join the rebellion he had spent his life avoiding after getting in with smugglers in his childhood. Dave Filoni, who created Star Wars Rebels, previously stated that he rarely brings animated characters into live-action projects. “I know people think it's the other way around, which is fascinating to me, but I think there are two ways to look at that, which is that, yes, they were animated characters, but to me, they're just characters,” he said.

Star Wars Rebels is available to watch on Disney+.
