Star Wars’ Frank Oz Says The Last Jedi Backlash Is “Horse Cr-p”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi was nothing short of a critical and commercial success when it premiered last year. However, while the film enjoyed overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, the sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens became one of the most of the divisive entries in the franchise. More traditional fans weren't quite fond of the way the film tried to subvert fan expectations, nor were they fond of how the film turned the benevolent Luke Skywalker into a flawed and jaded hermit.

Yoda star Frank Oz, on the other hand, has a very different impression of the film, responding to the backlash surrounding the movie during a panel at this year's South by Southwest (via Indie Wire).

"I love [The Last Jedi]," Oz told the Star Wars fans present at the event. "All the people who don't like this Jedi thing is just horse crap. It's about expectations. The movie didn't fill their expectations. But as filmmakers, we're not here to fulfill people's expectations."

Oz has always been candid about his thoughts on The Last Jedi. Oz seemed to have a particularly strong opinion regarding all the hate surrounding the movie, defending the film from its detractors in an interview with Collider, explaining that the film was organic and that each decision was right for the moment and for the character present in the film.

"Yeah, there's a whole backlash. I couldn't understand that whole backlash. I didn't get it," Oz told the publication, "I thought it was a great piece of work. I never understood that backlash. I'm somebody that works with the script, and if the script is there and I believe the script is organic and right for the moment and the character, then that's kind of all I think about. I don't think about extra powers or anything, I just go with it. I just don't consider that really."

There are a lot of different opinions surrounding The Last Jedi, but while the film does have its staunch critics, it also has its supporters who enjoyed the film's layered commentary and its human moments.
