The coronavirus pandemic has caused major repercussions in the film industry, resulting in movies and TV shows facing production shutdown and release dates getting delayed further and further. Disney has already shifted release dates for their upcoming movies. Now, a new calendar shakeup sees the future Star Wars films pushed back a year.
Variety reports that the three Star Wars movies initially slated for release in 2022, 2024, and 2026 will now be delayed for a whole year. That said, the films' debut will still remain around Christmas. The first of three movies will be released on Dec. 22, 2023, the second will hit theaters in Dec. 19, 2025, while the third movie is set to arrive in Dec. 17, 2027.
The outlet points out that this is part of Disney's "huge shift" in release dates, moving around release dates for various films given that the theaters remain closed due to the pandemic.
Aside from the movies set in the galaxy far, far away, Disney also delayed the Avatar sequels. James Cameron's movies will be released every other December starting with Avatar 2 in 2022, while the rest follow suit in 2024, 2026, and 2028.
Details about these upcoming Star Wars films remain unknown. However, Lucasfilm has already revealed that directors Kevin Feige, Taika Waititi, and Rian Johnson will be helming future Star Wars projects.
