Star Wars: Episode IX Might Not Be As Significant In Disney’s Grand Scheme Of Things

Star Wars: Episode IX might be one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, but some believe that the third and final sequel trilogy installment won't do much for Disney in the grander scheme of the Star Wars franchise.

Forbes just recently wrote an article on the significance of Episode IX and it looks like the publication believes that Disney doesn't necessarily need the upcoming Star Wars movie because no matter how the film performs, it won't affect the bigger questions.

Sure, everyone might be expecting a lot from Episode IX as the final entry in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy, but Forbes believes the film doesn't really matter because even after its release, Disney will still face the same challenge. This challenge includes questions like whether the studio can make general audiences care about Star Wars entries that aren't directly connected to the original trilogy ( A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi). Can Disney make fans care about films that aren't explicitly tied to the Skywalker saga?

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story might have performed pretty well as a spinoff, but Solo: A Star Wars Story crashed at the box office – mostly because of Disney's poor marketing campaign for the movie.

While there's a whole lot of significance in being the final entry in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Forbes believes Episode IX has very little to do in the grander scheme of things. There's no doubt that Episode IX will win at the box office. What's more worrying right now is whether Disney really pushes through with Rian Johnson's disconnected Star Wars trilogy and whether Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff really do get their movie series.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
