Star Wars: Episode IX Editor Says The Film Had To Be Edited On Set

It looks like J.J. Abrams and his team really are working hard on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker because it looks like the films editor had to begin to work on the film right on-set during the movie's production.

Speaking at the Script to Screen series at the Carsey-Wolf Center last week (via Coming Soon), The Rise of Skywalker editor Maryann Brandon decided to open up about what she had to do working on the new sequel trilogy entry. It turns out that the flm's schedule was much tighter than what she was given when she was working on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so Brandon had to work twice as hard to make up for lost time.

"When we did The Force Awakens, we started in May and we finished shooting in October, and we were out [the following] Christmas," the editor said during the interview, "For this film, we didn't start until August, so we weren't done until February shooting – so we have four months less time, and it's a very big film. So I convinced J.J. to let me cut on the set. He was like, ‘No, we never do that'."

This might come as a concern for fans. We'd like to hear that the film had all the time it needed for production. However, fans have to remember that Brandon isn't necessarily saying that Episode IX is being rushed. We have to trust the editor's skills – besides, it seems like Brandon was simply trying to get ahead of what might have been a problem for the movie.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
