Star Wars: Episode IX Director J.J. Abrams On Whether Film Responds To TLJ Backlash

For the past few months, Star Wars fans were left high and dry as Lucasfilm continued to hold on to Star Wars: Episode IX's secrets, keeping the film's teaser and title as far away from the public as possible. Despite the dry spell, Star Wars fans can finally find a bit of respite. Episode IX director J.J. Abrams finally has a few words about the film, opening up about whether the third sequel trilogy installment would have anything to do with the backlash against its predecessor, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Making his way down to the 14th Annual Oscar Wilde Awards at Bad Robot last Thursday, Abrams went on an interview with Entertainment Tonight. During his discussion with the publication, the filmmaker was asked about Episode IX and whether the film was a direct response to the divisive feedbacks towards The Last Jedi.

Though the filmmaker didn't give a direct answer, Abrams seemed to want to distance Episode IX from its predecessor, saying that each film had its own charm.

"I think every movie is its own movie and this is a trilogy. We brought to that movie all the passion and hard work that we would have no matter what. I think the story speaks for itself. I really, truly can't wait for you to see it," Abrams told the entertainment news outlet.

Fans can't wait to see the film either. They also can't wait to see a teaser of Episode IX, and rumor has it that everyone might have to wait for Star Wars Celebration for the first trailer to come around. Guess we all just better hold on to the edge of our seats a bit longer.

Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
