Being one of the largest and most popular science fiction film franchises in Hollywood history, it barely comes as a surprise to see Star Wars being overrun by overly zealous fans.
However, while the fanbase's passion can be admirable, some Star Wars fans can go over the line, attacking the cast and crew of Star Wars entries that they don't particularly like. Lucasfilm sequel entry star Daisy Ridley has been at the receiving end of those attacks – something that's forced Ridley to remove herself from social media.
Speaking in an interview with Bustle to help promote the next Star Wars movie, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Ridley opens up about the fanbase and how disappointing it is to see some trample on the hard work done by the people at Lucasfilm.
"It's great that people are expressive of their views. But this is people's jobs. People worked really, really hard on that thing," the British actress admitted in her interview with the publication, "I think there's a way of having a discussion that isn't so vicious."
According to Ridley, social media can give users a false sense of importance and make them feel like they have every right to personally attack and lash out at others.
"If you've got however many followers, and you write something that you think is, like, so deep, and a hundred people like it, it's constant reinforcement," Ridley explained.
While Star Wars fans have every right to express themselves and share their thoughts and opinions about elements of the various Star Wars movies they like or don't like, fans shouldn't really go as far as personally attacking the cast and crew of these entries. There's always a way to express dissenting opinions respectfully.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
