Star Wars Concept Designer Explains Ahsoka's Shorter Head-Tails in The Mandalorian Season 2

There is little doubt that fans loved it when Rosario Dawson finally debuted as Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 5. However, some were also quick to point out that the character had a decidedly different look compared to the animated version that appeared in Star Wars Rebels. So why did Ahsoka's montrals or lekku get much shorter in live-action?

Star Wars fans already know that Ahsoka's head-tails were very long in Rebels but the live-action version of the character had montrals/lekku that were a lot shorter. Not surprisingly, people had questions about the change that may have something to do with impracticality and someone even reached out to Lucasfilm character concept designer Brian Matyas about it. Take a look at Matyas' response below.

"Yea pretty much that was the chief concern," Matyas wrote in response to making a more practical change for Ahsoka.

"From animation to live action I did a ton of design exploration for her and their appropriate size for the actor with consideration for stunts and movement," Matyas wrote before adding, "I'm sure I'll get to discuss at greater length in the near future!"

That certainly makes sense considering that Dawson had to do several action scenes in The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 5. The longer head-tails could be heavier and difficult to work with so the show chose to make things easier for the actor.

You can see Dawson in action as Ahsoka in The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 5, which is currently streaming on Disney+.
