It has been said a million times before but it truly bears repeating: the Star Wars franchise experienced another resurgence thanks to the duo of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni who are primarily responsible for the inception of the "MandoVerse". Now, the next chapter in the post-Return of the Jedi saga is ready to be told with the arrival of the Ahsoka series top-billed by Rosario Dawson.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly during this year's D23 Expo, Favreau and Filoni discussed the future of the Star Wars franchise and how Ahsoka will be different from its MandoVerse contemporaries. Intriguingly enough, The Mandalorian creator and showrunner described the show's genre as "samurai-adventure".
Favreau explains: "You know, you have Andor that is intrigue and a thriller. You have adventure… with The Mandalorian. You know, samurai-adventure with Ahsoka. So to have this young, Amblin-feeling movie with young people seeing it for the first time, who grew up in the Star Wars world, and are exposed to adventure, the puppets, the costumes, the visuals, the world that’s being expanded upon."
He continued: "And now, I get to write the next season of Mandalorian with all these new characters, and new locations, and new creatures, so it just keeps adding more, and more, and so, where there’s this cohesive group of stories that are being told thanks to all these filmmakers that are contributing."

What does that mean, exactly? Well, it's worth noting that creator George Lucas drew massive inspiration from Japanese cinematographer Akira Kurosawa and his 1958 film The Hidden Fortress for the original trilogy. Unsurprisingly, the influence carried over throughout the franchise's long history. Most recently, Kurosawa's influence in the franchise was evident in The Mandalorian which is said to be inspired by Seven Samurai.
Ahsoka's release window has yet to be confirmed. However, the series is expected to debut on Disney+ sometime in 2023.
