It was recently revealed that the third season of Star Trek: Discovery will be released this October 15 on CBS All Access. The series comes just shortly after the season finale of Lower Decks. This is something that the franchise hasn't done since the nineties and it could potentially mean more for its future.
Discovery Season 3 arrives just one week after Lower Decks, with the latter releasing new episodes starting August 6 to October 8. The former will run for 13 episodes, which means there'll be 23 weeks of nonstop Star Trek content.
For the first time in three decades, Star Trek will be uninterrupted through the end of the year and into the beginning of 2021. The '90s saw multiple interconnected Star Trek series running back-to-back. The final two seasons of The Next Generation aired in 1993-1994, around the same time Deep Space Nine made its debut. Voyager launched soon after while DS9 was in its fourth season.
As what Inverse pointed out, it is possible that Lower Decks won't directly reference the "missing" starship USS Discovery in its final episode. However, a crossover between Picard and the two aforementioned series has yet to take place. With shows such as Strange New Worlds and Section 31 in the works, a crossover event is bound to happen, and when that time comes, Trek fans will surely be excited.
The outlet also points out that having a Trek crossover poses well for other franchises too. With Arrowverse shows seemingly the only "contemporary good analog" for a shared fantasy TV universe, having a crossover could set the precedent for franchises such as Star Wars to do so as well.
