Oscar season is almost here and it looks like a certain superhero might be swinging into several possible nominations. It has just been confirmed that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are determined to push Spider-Man: No Way Home. But will the superhero flick manage to dominate the 94th Academy Awards next year?
The Hollywood Reporter has released an in-depth focus on Sony and Marvel's big plans for Spider-Man: No Way Home. After all, the MCU's third Spider-Man film has already grossed an astonishing $50 million domestically on Thursday night alone and is already set to bring in $100 billion worldwide.
Fans and critics are also loving No Way Home and the film has already landed a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That's the same score as West Side Story, another Oscar hopeful. But will all the success be good enough to actually win an Academy Award?
We know that superhero movies generally don't do too well in the Academy Awards because of their genre. Despite box office success and fan enthusiasm, comic book films are generally overlooked for more serious features.
Not surprisingly, Marvel and Sony are determined to change that stigma with Spider-Man: No Way Home. The report confirms that both studios are supporting the sequel with everything they've got. It will not be a surprise if both studios nominate the movie for several categories but we'll have to wait and see if the Academy agrees that No Way Home deserves an Oscar.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is directed by Jon Watts and follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he desperately tries to conceal his identity again. With the help of Dr Strange, a spell is cast to make everyone forget Peter is Spider-Man but it also has several drastic consequences.
The third Spider-Man movie is now screening in theaters worldwide.
