Phil Lord and Chris Miller may have been infamously fired from directing Solo: A Star Wars Story, but the two have been doing nothing but hits ever since, what with the successful releases of The LEGO Movie 2 and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. With Lord and Miller's background on animation, it's been announced that Sony is having the pair lead the way for their own Marvel TV Universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lord and Miller have signed a five-year deal with Sony Pictures to develop shows based on their available Marvel characters—presumably, everyone related to Spider-Man. Lord and Miller said this in a joint statement:
"We are so grateful to everyone at Sony Pictures Television for choosing to partner with us and expand our enduring relationship with the studio… Together we aim to make groundbreaking work of the highest quality and integrity, and to place that work in convenient proximity to your eyeballs and earholes, wherever you may be."
We don't know what these series are yet, but rumors have been floating around that Sony is making plans for spinoffs based on characters like Spider-Ham and Spider-Noir. I'm just crossing my fingers that the studio also sticks to animated films, which usually have a higher budget and quality when it comes to animated television shows. For now, rumor has it that a direct Spider-Verse sequel is in the works plus an all-woman team-up with characters like Gwen Stacy and Silke.
I have a lot of faith in Lord and Miller, and I'm sure whatever they bring to the table is going to be fine. They have their work put out for them with fantastic films like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street. Hopefully, we get some great animated shows out of these two moving forward.
No release date has been set for Phil Lord and Chris Miller's next project for Sony.
