Even after the release of Sony's excellent Spider-Man: Far From Home, pretty much everyone agrees that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the best film to ever feature the wallcrawler. It's even better than Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame believe it or not, though I won't get into that flame war and instead discuss the clickbaity headline above. So, why was Doctor Octopus turned into a woman and why is it considered nepotism?
Well, according to Spider-Verse co-director Rodney Rothman it was his partner Bob Persichetti who made the call since he's good friends with Dock Ock actress Kathryn Hann. That's a case of nepotism for sure but when you consider how directors like J.J. Abrams, James Gunn, and even The Russo Brothers have done this before, it's pretty harmless.
Plus, Hann was awesome in the role and the film's reveal of her being Doctor Octopus was a true highlight. The fact that no one saw it coming is a testament to the marketing and we're honestly surprised that Sony didn't spoil it themselves. Seriously, that studio looooooves to spoil their movies in advance.
If you haven't seen it yet, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse should still be on Netflix and is 100% worth watching. As mentioned previously, it's the best movie ever made to feature the wallcrawler and is a fantastic debut for Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen. We will see the sequel in October 2022 and many of us are hoping it's at least half as good as the first.
