The entire Marvel Universe was shaken to its very core when the shocking news came out last week that Willem Dafoe who played Norman Osborn aka Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man trilogy was spotted on-set for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' upcoming third Spidey film.

Multiple sources have claimed to have seen the Aquaman actor on the set of Homecoming 3 but up to now, we've yet to see photographic evidence to back up the rumors. Still, that didn't stop webheads from getting extremely excited for the film which Tom Holland describes as "the most ambitious superhero film ever".

Dafoe's take on the villain was phenomenal for sure but the majority of fans who grew up watching the Raimi trilogy didn't like the Green Goblin design they went with. Instead of taking inspiration from his comic book counterpart, Norman's Gobby suit was redesigned and it wasn't something diehard Marvel fans were expecting during the time.

With Osborn potentially wreaking havoc in Earth-616, is there a chance we could see a more faithful iteration of the legendary Spidey villain's look? Digital artist @venomhology recently took to his Instagram page to share his "amazing" artwork depicting Dafoe in Green Goblin's traditional comics look and I gotta say, it looks a lot more menacing than the 2002 version. Check it out here:

Now, it honestly wouldn't surprise me if Dafoe does end up joining the highly-anticipated project. After all, villains like Electro and Doc Ock have already been confirmed to appear plus other baddies that already exist in the MCU.

It's safe to assume at this point that they're in fact setting up the big-screen arrival of the Sinister Six (which could potentially include Vulture, Scorpion, and Mysterio) but the question is, can Tom Holland's Spider-Man take them on all by himself? That's quite a lot of villains that he may end up needing some backup.

The MCU's third Spider-Man film hits cinemas in December.
