Paramount+ is set to stream Special Ops: Lioness, an upcoming spy thriller based on a real-life CIA program and created by Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind Yellowstone.

The show stars Laysla De Oliveira as Cruz Manuelos, a passionate young Marine who is recruited to join the CIA's Lioness Engagement Team to help take down a terrorist organization from the inside.

Special Ops: Lioness Plot

As previously mentioned, the series follows the journey of Cruz Manuelos, a young Marine who joins the CIA's Lioness Engagement Team, which comprises a group of female undercover operatives. Their mission is to bring down a terrorist organization from the inside.

According to Vanity Fair, the series is based on a real-life CIA program, and the creators are determined to make the espionage genre more inclusive by featuring women as lead characters.

De Oliveira is joined by an impressive cast, including Zoe Saldaña, who plays Joe, the station chief of the Lioness Engagement Team. Saldaña is tasked with training, managing, and leading her team of elite female operatives.

Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman was initially attached to the project as an executive producer but will also appear on screen. According to Saldaña, working with Kidman was part of the appeal of the project.

Taylor Sheridan Steps Away from NeoWestern in Lioness

Sheridan's previous television projects have predominantly been neo-westerns, but Special Ops: Lioness is expected to be more like his earlier work in Sicario. The show is a law enforcement procedural with a focus on a group of complicated women at the helm.

The show's creators aim to make the espionage genre more diverse by featuring women in key roles, a refreshing change from the traditional male-led spy thrillers.

The Yellowstone universe has been hugely successful for Sheridan, but the main branch of the series is on shaky ground following the announcement that star Kevin Costner won't be returning after Season 5.

Special Ops: Lioness comes at the perfect time to remind audiences of Sheridan's skill in creating star-studded TV dramas.

Special Ops: Lioness promises to be an exciting addition to the espionage genre. With its diverse cast of women and real-life inspiration, the show is set to bring a fresh take to the spy thriller.
