South Park: The Fractured But Whole Darkens Custom Character’s Skin Depending On Difficulty, Gives Transgender Option

South Park has always been the show to commentate on relevant issues that affect the world, usually in a darkly comedic light. With South Park: The Fractured But Whole coming out soon, it's clear that the game will have it's fair share of commentary and satire throughout the game. What fans probably weren't expecting was the difficulty darkening your created character's skin.

Eurogamer had the chance to play the game, and noticed how the character's skin would get lighter if the difficulty slider went to easy and darker if it went harder. When this happens, Cartman says "Don't Worry. This doesn't affect combat. Just every other aspect of your life." Apparently, the character's skin color will affect how money is given and the way people talk to you, which could be a first in a video game.

Choosing a character's gender also has more depth than a typical video game. After choosing a default sex - boy or girl - players can then choose if they are cisgender or transgender. The game is a sequel to The Stick of Truth, which only had a boy option, so if the player chooses a girl, it will either retcon the gender or have the previous male character become a transgender female. It's a noteworthy aspect, and one that many gamers will appreciate.

It's clear that South Park: The Fractured But Whole will represent the show very well. Add the addictive Paper Mario-style battle system and it should be a great game, especially after the excellent Stick of Truth. Players can get The Fractured But Whole on PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 17, with digital pre-orders coming with an HD version of The Stick of Truth.
