One of the upcoming live-action Spider-Verse films that Sony is currently working on is El Muerto which will star best-selling artist Bad Bunny. Just like the other films in the franchise, this project will center on another villain that Spider-Man faced in the comics.
However, ever since the announcement last year, we haven't heard any other significant update about the progress of the project aside from the director and writer that was hired.
The lack of news regarding the project also becomes more concerning as it is set for release early next year and it is nowhere near the production stage at this point.
Now, we finally have a new update on the film and it sounds like an early next year release is no longer imminent.
El Muerto Will No Longer Release in January 2024
According to Deadline, Sony has pulled off El Muerto from their release calendar. The film was previously set for release in theaters on January 12, 2024, before the studio made the decision today to cancel its early next year release.
So far, the studio has not announced a new date for its release nor has they offered an explanation regarding why they removed it from the calendar.
However, given that we're around six months away from its original release date and the project has not made it through the production stage, it is not surprising to hear that the studio decided not to continue with its January 2024 release.
There is a likelihood now that the film will release in either late 2024 (if production will begin later this year) or a June 2025 release, which is a date that they reserved recently for an untitled Spider-Verse project.
While this might be concerning, fans should not worry about the fate of the project itself as Sony has not shelved the Bad Bunny vehicle yet and the only indication of this unsurprising move is that they won't be able to commit to the January 2024 release.
We should be hearing more news and updates about the project in the coming weeks or months and it is likely that we will hear a more definitive update about it once the current writers' strike ends.
