Sony Already Considering Director and Star for Spider-Woman Movie

Marvel fans were met with surprising news earlier this week when Sony announced that it would be releasing another Marvel movie for the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters in 2021. Not only does the premiere date seem a little bit premature considering the project's announcement, but Sony's announcement poses the question of whether the new movie ties into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Though there are some that believe the mystery project has to do with Sony's Kraven the Hunter movie, there are rumors suggesting that the studio may very well bring Spider-Woman into the SUMC. Two days ago, word began spreading that Sony was hoping to fill in the female void in is comic book movie franchise by developing a Spider-Woman standalone movie. Jessica Drew has a lot of storytelling potential, and having the character appear in the SUMC allows the studio to tie together with the MCU.

Now, Illuminerdi offers fans new details about the report, saying that Sony is currently eyeing Michelle MacLaren to direct the film. To those who aren't familiar with the filmmaker, MacLaren is known for directing episodes on highly successful and complex series like Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, and Game of Thrones.

If the reports are proven to be true and MacLaren does accept the offer, then Spider-Woman would be the filmmaker's very first feature film, and a comic book movie to boot.

The site also suggests that Sony already has an actress in mind for the role, hoping that the studio might be able to tap Tomb Raider and Ex Machina star, Alicia Vikander.

As exciting as all of this might sound, we have to remind fans to take the report with a grain of salt. We can't be sure about any of these rumors until we get word from Sony.
