Sonic the Hedgehog: Jim Carrey Compares Dr. Robotnik to the Riddler

Though Jim Carrey has been working on some more insightful work (like the fantastic show, Kidding), he's going back to his wacky antics for Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog film. What's funny is, Carrey is comparing it to another kooky character he's played in the past—The Riddler.

During the press junket for Sonic the Hedgehog (via ComicBook), Carrey explains:

"Well, I think I think they're both basically spinning. They're both spinning in the tree of knowledge. They're leaping from branch to branch and falling occasionally… I wouldn't put one against the other. I think they'd be a great team. But you know, it's like Robotnik and every super-villain basically comes from a place of neglect with a feeling of absolute worthlessness that manifests itself in magnificent creations that are designed to control the world, put their brand on everybody, and maybe even get inside your bloodstream with some nanotechnology occasionally."

I mean, even Carrey's breakdown of the character is full of mature insight. Though I love how Carrey is working on more mature things in his recent projects, I think it's also fun to have him come back to his roots. After all, this was the reason why so many kids loved him back in the 90s. Maybe this film will cement Carrey in the hearts of a new generation of kids.

With the redesign of Sonic, things are starting to look up for the movie. Even since the first teaser came out, a lot of fans were already excited to have Carrey as the villain. Now with a more marketable mascot, this movie should have no problem being a smash hit.

Catch Sonic the Hedgehog when it comes out Feb. 14.
