Sonic 2 Producers Will NOT Recast Dr. Robotnik If Jim Carrey Proceeds Retirement

Now that Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is an inch away from its theatrical release, we will once again see the fan-favorite Sonic on the big screens. Alongside Sonic, James Marsden will reprise his role as the small-town cop, Tom, and Jim Carrey's villainous character Dr. Robotnik will continue to hunt Sonic in the upcoming sequel.

While Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik plays a vital role in the Sonic franchise, Carrey's latest announcement that he plans to retire after Sonic The Hedgehog 2 must be heart-wrenching for the fans as Carrey perfectly portrays Dr. Robertnik with his comedic talents and manic energy.

However, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 producers are confident that Jim Carrey will reprise her role in Sonic The Hedgehog 3, but if ever he doesn't, he will always be Dr. Robotnik.

In a recent interview with IGN, at the blue carpet premiere for Sonic The Hedgehog 2, producers Moritz and Ascher said that they won't recast Dr. Robotnik if Carrey eventually decides to retire. However, the producers are still hoping that the actor would return for the threequel.

Ascher explained, "Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family and he'll always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he'd like to be around. We love Jim and he's so special, and what he does with Robotnik is so incredible. We would love him as long as he'd like to be there with us." Moritz added, "I have a feeling that he loves Robotnik so much that I don't think he'll be able to walk away from that."

It would be difficult to see a future Sonic film without Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik, and it would be challenging to cast another actor for the role after Carrey left a gold standard. Aside from the third film, Paramount and Sega have already announced a spin-off focusing on Idris Elba's Knuckles is now under development following Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

Sonic The Hedgehog director Jeff Fowler recently said that the films won't exactly follow the game's order in terms of story, so if ever Jim Carrey retires, the franchise has to move on and possibly choose a new villain. Plus, having a well-acclaimed actor such as Jim Carrey for Sonic The Hedgehog for two franchises must be an amazing experience for the production and the fans.

For now, we can catch Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik in Sonic The Hedgehog 2, coming in theaters on April 8.
