Solo Star Emilia Clarke Was Frustrated By Phil Lord And Chris Miller’s Direction

There was a whole lot of controversy when Lucasfilm decided to fire Solo: A Star Wars Story's original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The directors had already been deep in production when the studio decided to kick them off the project, and many were concerned that this would affect Solo's development. Luckily, Lucasfilm managed to have nab Ron Howard a few days after they parted ways with the 21 Jumpstreet directors.

According to Solo actress Emilia Clarke, it was Howard who managed to save the film from spinning out of control.

Speaking in an interview with Vanity Fair, Clarke opened up about the directorial shake-up, saying that even she got frustrated by the way Lord and Miller handled the production.

"I'm not gonna lie," Clarke admitted. "I struggled with Qi'ra quite a lot. I was like: ‘Y'all need to stop telling me that she's "film noir," because that ain't a note.'"

Because of Lord and Miller's incompetence, the Game of Thrones actress was forced to approach Solo writers Lawrence and Jon Kasdan for help in finding the voice of her character. But then Howard was hired to fix the film, and things began to brighten for Solo.

"All hail to [Lucasfilm president] Kathy [Kennedy] for hiring Ron," Clarke gushed. "He even feigned enthusiasm! I know for a fact he had that discussion with everybody. I think we all came to set feeling like his favorite. It makes for a really happy load of actors, with our egos."

Howard did a pretty great job of fixing things. Though the film's opening weekend projections are low, Solo is doing pretty well for a film with so much trouble behind the scenes.
