Solo: A Star Wars Story Writers Say Replacing Lord And Miller Was “Excruciating”

There might be a lot of excitement building up over Solo: A Star Wars Story, but a few months ago there was a large cloud of anxiety shrouded over the film. Last year, Lucasfilm decided to fir original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller because of "creative differences" and many fans worried that production woes would affect the outcome of the film.

Though it seems like Solo turned out all right under the wing of new director Ron Howard, screenwriters Lawrence and Jonathan Kasdan say that replacing Lord and Miller was actually a pretty "excruciating" process for the production.

The father-son duo recently spoke in an interview with Indie Wire, and during the discussion, the writers discussed Solo's troubles on set.

"Well, it was excruciating," Jonathan Kasdan explained. "It was painful for everyone involved, and it was really the last thing I think anyone wanted. There was no one involved in this movie who was hoping that this would go down this way. And, given the reality of the situation and what did happen, I think we ended up with someone we barely even deserved. He was so wonderful."

Lord and Miller had already been deep into filming when Lucasfilm decided to fire the two for straying away from the tone the studio set out for the film. After firing the two, there was a lot of pressure to keep production going so that Solo could meet its May release date.

Luckily, Lucasfilm managed to reel in director Ron Howard a few days after separating ways with Lord and Miller, keeping Solo on track of its original premiere. Based on the positive reviews from Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and other Lucasfilm people who've seen the film, Solo's doing pretty well for a film with so many production issues.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits cinemas May 25.
