Manga UP! is strengthening its lineup of titles as the award-winning manga Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You was just released on Manga UP! recently.
With this release, fans of the manga outside Japan finally have a way to read this critically acclaimed series on an official platform. Previously, international fans were only able to read it via fan translations.
While it may not be a huge battle shonen with lots of exciting fights, Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You has a big following thanks to its unique premise.
Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You: A Hit Manga With a Cool Premise
It’s tough to categorize Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You given its unique story. Slice-of-life is probably the genre that best fits this manga.
But unlike most slice-of-life manga which feature comfy and heartwarming stories, this Square Enix series instead deals with the crushing realities of modern living. Though this is balanced with some warmth.
Specifically, the story follows Sasaki, a 45-year-old salaryman who is often overworked and finds solace when buying stuff at a convenience store thanks to the cheery demeanor of the cashier, Yamada.
Sasaki also gets some relief from his job by going on a smoke break behind a supermarket.
There, he meets Tayama, a cool and mysterious woman. Unbeknownst to him, Tayama and Yamada are the same.
While the series was only released in March 2022, it quickly got a lot of attention following its release.
Soon, it was celebrated at the 2022 Next Manga Award where it won in the web category.
The series was also recognized in the 16th Manga Taishō, as well as in various manga recommendation publications.

Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You Finally Gets an English Release
Square Enix launched the Manga UP! service internationally in mid-2022. Since then, several titles have been released on the platform, with the latest being Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You.
The manga’s release was announced on the platform’s official Twitter account.
As the manga has been serialized for some time now, all currently released chapters are available on the platform.
Unlike Manga Plus which has a selection of titles where readers can access all chapters of select manga at least once, Manga UP! does not have a similar ongoing promo.
Because of this, fans will need to purchase in-app XP to get caught up to the latest chapter as quickly as possible.
