The Significance of Fireworks in A Silent Voice
In the few minutes after the opening sequence of A Silent Voice, we see Shoya Ishida about to take his own life by jumping off the bridge.
However, before he did something reckless, Shoya was distracted by some kids who were working on some fireworks. Then, we see Shoya recalling the events that led him to his decision to end his life.
On the other hand, the movie makes use of fireworks once again as a backdrop for Shoko Nishimiya’s attempt to take her own life during the fireworks festival.
It was a beautiful yet tragic scene that surely traumatized a lot of fans. Noticeably, both of these significant scenes use fireworks as a backdrop.
In Japan, fireworks are a symbol of ephemeral beauty—a moment in time that only passes and will never come again, just like a person’s life.

A Silent Voice Fireworks Scene Explained
The fireworks scene in A Silent Voice is also known as the balcony scene. It starts festive, with Shoya and the Nishimiya family attending a fireworks festival together.
All of a sudden, Shoko decides to go home with the excuse that she needs to work on some school assignments.
Afterward, Yuzuru realized that she had left her camera at home. She asked Shoya to go get it for her.
Shoya reached the Nishimiya household, rang the doorbell, and made himself in. He is successful in finding the camera, and he also sees Nishimiya on the balcony as if she’s admiring the fireworks.
Shoya realized that Shoko had a different plan in mind, so he quickly ran towards her, even after falling on the floor.
He screamed Nishimiya’s name so loudly that he was able to hold one of her hands before she could fall from the balcony.
While trying to save Shoko, Shoya called for Kami-sama to give him just one more ounce of strength.
He also promised that he wouldn’t escape from life’s challenges and that he'd look at everyone’s faces. In addition, he also promised that he'd do everything properly.
Shoya even noticed the scar he left on Shoko in the past and asked himself if he ever apologized to her properly. In his mind, Shoya kept on apologizing to Shoko for everything he had done.
He also wants to find out what Shoko feels for him all this time. Shoya successfully saves Shoko, only to fall on her behalf.
The movie didn’t show Shoya falling to the ground but rather showed him plunging into the water. Blood spills from Shoya’s body, and then he starts feeling cold while seeing memories of his family and even Shoko.
What Happens to Shoko After the Fireworks Scene?
After the fireworks scene, Shoko felt incredibly sorry for what she had done. Shoya fell into a deep coma, and the Nishimiya family had to ask for Miyako Ishida’s forgiveness.
Naoka, on the other hand, blames Shoko for what happened, to the extent that she was aggressively hurting Shoko and even her mother.
To repay Shoya for what he had done, Shoko decided to reach out to old friends and tell them what happened.
She even dreamed of Shoya saying goodbye to her, which pushed her to go to the bridge where they used to feed koi fish together.
Later, Shoya wakes up from his comatose state. He immediately looked for Shoko, and they apologized to each other.
Shoya also asked Shoko to help him continue living after confessing to her that he also tried to end his life in the past.
