Shazam! may be marketing Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong) as the main villain of the film, but we have confirmation that we'll also be getting an appearance from the 7 Deadly Sins. According to producer Peter Safran, they play a pretty similar role in this film pretty much like The Trench sequence from last year's Aquaman.
Talking to Collider, Safran shared:
"The Sins are gonna' be in some way involved in the story… So without revealing exactly how they're integrated into the storyline, I would say that's probably as close to what James [Wan] did with The Trench. We really let David flex [by building] those kinds of sequences that are scary and cool."
If you've seen Aquaman, you'll know that one standout sequence in the one where Mera and Arthur try to retrieve the trident while visiting the kingdom of the Trench. You really get to see James Wan stretch his horror roots.
With Shazam!, the movie is said to have a big emphasis on comedy, but I would be impressed if they pull off a sequence with the Sins that are just as scary as the Trench. Though they have different forms in the comics, this film is said to focus more on them being monsters rather than humanoids.
Aquaman was a huge hit for DC, and everyone is crossing their fingers that Shazam! won't be another stumble for the franchise. I'm sure Marvel is pretty tired competing with itself.
