Shazam! Director Subtly Reminds Everyone About The Original Captain Marvel

Brie Larson might be Marvel Studio's new Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Shazam! director David F. Sandberg has been subtly reminding the actress who the real Captain Marvel is in the comic book universe.

While Marvel does own the trademark for Captain Marvel, allowing the publishing company to release comics and other media with the actual title Captain Marvel, DC's Shazam also goes by the name Captain Marvel. The comic book publishing company has also published their own series of Captain Marvel comics, like the Power of Shazam, the Trials of Shazam and other titles focused on DC's Billy Batson.

Taking to Twitter, Sandberg decided to remind Larson about Shazam's rights as the original Captain Marvel, posting a little Tweet that throws shade at Marvel's upcoming Captain Marvel standalone movie.

Unfortunately, while Shazam is the original Captain Marvel, DC had to partially relent and give up on using the name when the company decided to do the New 52 relaunch back in 2011.

While it remains to be seen whether or not Shazam! will make mention of Billy Batson as Captain Marvel in Zachary Levi's first standalone DC Extended Universe movie, Sandberg feels like the film won't have a problem standing out from its competition.

"It's such a unique character, and it is that wish fulfillment of a kid that gets to become an adult superhero, which we haven't seen before, really," Sandberg told Entertainment Weekly. "So it's just a really fun movie that has its own style."

Filled with levity and youthful banter, Shazam! is one of the DCEU films that fans are looking forward to next week.

Shazam! hits cinemas April 5, 2019.
