Warner Bros. dropped a major bombshell yesterday concerning the future of the DC Extended Universe. Turns out, the franchise's 2022 slate has received a drastic shake-up with films like The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom being pushed back to 2023. The only film that was able to retain its 2022 release is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Black Adam but even the project has been delayed to October.

As frustrating as it may sound, it's actually a double-edged sword when you think about it because the latest DCEU delays paved the way for Shazam! Fury of the Gods' release to get moved up which makes a lot of sense considering the project has wrapped up filming months ago.

Originally slated for a June 2023 opening, the Shazam! sequel will now be occupying Aquaman 2's supposed December 16, 2022 release window which means Zachary Levi and crew will be going head-to-head with Disney's highly anticipated Avatar sequel. The titanic clash doesn't seem to worry director David F. Sandberg who took to Twitter to troll fans by posting a screenshot of Avatar 2 as a trending topic along with the DCEU follow-up.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Fury of the Gods is coming in as the underdog against a film literally a decade in the making. But if the original Shazam! film taught us anything, it is to not underestimate Billy Batson and for all we know, the sequel could end up becoming another sleeper hit for the DCEU.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits cinemas on December 16, 2022.
