There is little doubt that fans are expecting all the Marvel stars to return in What If...?, the new animated series that will explore alternative stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it looks like the franchise's most controversial star of the moment isn't coming back for the show. It has just been confirmed that Scarlett Johansson is not lending her voice to Black Widow in the Disney+ series.
It has been revealed that Johansson didn't record for What If...? although Natasha Romanoff is set to appear in the series. This isn't a huge surprise considering that Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Tom Holland, and Brie Larson are not working on the show either.
Fans have noted that there could be another reason why Johansson is not joining the What If...? series. The Avengers: Endgame star is currently in the middle of a legal battle after she filed a lawsuit against Disney for breach of contract.
The lawsuit purports that the studio breached her contract when it released Black Widow on Disney+. With that in mind, it seems unlikely that she would be interested in working on a show for the streaming service.
Although Black Widow will be voiced by a different actor, fans can still expect to hear other stars in What If...? next week. In addition to that, there will be crazy alternate stories to look forward to in the animated show.
Marvel's What If...? will feature the voices of Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, and many more. The series will also feature the late Chadwick Boseman's final performance as Black Panther is a special story arc where T'Challa is the one taken by Yondu Udonta and becomes Star-Lord.
What If...? will premiere on Disney+ on August 11, 2021.
