Scarlett Johansson Says Black Widow Movie’s Main Theme is Family

Black Widow might seem like a spy thriller, but it looks like one of the most important themes of the highly-anticipated comic book movie is about family.

Speaking in an interview with Total Film Magazine (via its sister publication Games Radar), Marvel's Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson got to talk about her upcoming standalone movie as Natasha Romanoff. While the actress couldn't give away specific plot details about Black Widow, she did open up about the film's most important theme – family.

"One of the themes of the film is family," Johansson told the entertainment news outlet, "What is family? How does it define us? How does our past define us? How does our family – however we define it – make up who we are, for better or worse?"

The Avengers might have always been Natasha's main family in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it looks like fans are going to see the agent reunite with her original family in Russia.

We're excited to see what the rest of Natasha's family can do.

Florence Pugh is playing Yelena Belova, a sister figure to Natasha who was trained in the Red Room to act as another Black Widow. Fans have been speculating that Belova may take on Black Widow's name after hearing about Natasha's sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, but we have to wait and see. Stranger Things star David Harbour is the Red Guardian, the Russian counterpart of Captain America. Based on all the trailers for the film, we're bound to fall in love with the adorable Alexei Shostakov. Then there's Rachel Weisz playing Melina Vostokoff, a character fans suspect may betray Natasha in the end.

Black Widow's May 1 release has been delayed to an undisclosed schedule. Let's just wait and see what Marvel has planned for the movie.
