Scarlett Johansson Explains Why Black Widow's Death Scene was Changed in Avengers: Endgame

Black Widow's (Scarlett Johansson) sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame might have broken the hearts of Marvel fans around the globe, but as it turns out, Joe and Anthony Russo had a crueller death in mind for Natasha Romanoff.

Last year, the Russo brothers revealed that they had an alternate death scene for Black Widow, one where she would find herself being shot at by Thanos' (Josh Brolin) army on Vormir. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Scarlett Johansson reveals the reason why the Russos decided to against the scene where Black Widow gets chased down by an "army of Dementor-type creatures."

"I was thinking, ‘Parents will never forgive us for how these creatures look,'" the actress told the entertainment news outlet.

Because of this, the Russos shot another ending together with Johansson and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye). The directors then decided to give Black Widow, a quieter confrontation, one that would break the heart of the Marvel fanbase.

"We wanted to leave the audiences with the weight of that loss and the shock of it," Johansson said.

The scene worked. Fans were devastated by the loss of Black Widow. No one was really expecting Natasha to die in Endgame. Most bets were on Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). Without anyone expecting it, Black Widow gave her life up so that the Avengers might have a chance at turning things around and saving everyone from the Mad Titan's Decimation.

Luckily, fans are going to see Natasha again in her very own standalone movie.

Black Widow is set to premiere on May 1, 2020.
