Rumor: Spider-Man's Zendaya Offered the Role of Ariel in Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Disney was considered to have gone through an animation Renaissance back in the 90s, and it was all started with a film called The Little Mermaid. TLM is on the list of live-action adaptations for Disney and rumor has it that they're looking at a former Disney channel actress to play the lead role of Ariel.

According to That Hashtag Show, Spider-Man: Homecoming's Zendaya has been approached to play the lead role of Ariel. For now, Disney or Zendaya's reps haven't confirmed anything yet, so we should probably take this with a grain of salt.

With Zendaya in the lead role, it's said that Disney is taking a new step when it comes to casting women of color in lead roles. With that in mind, we should expect other underwater characters like King Triton to be people of color as well.

The movie will be directed by Rob Marshall, who was also at the helm for this year's Mary Poppins Returns. We're also promised a team-up of Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda who are tasked to write and add new songs to this film.

The Little Mermaid is yet to have a release date, but with the current slate of film's that Disney has now, we could be looking at a release sometime in 2020.
