Though the DCEU is trailing behind in the cinematic superhero franchise market, at least they have access to all of their comic heroes. With The Batman in the works and Birds of Prey preparing to shoot early next year, rumor has it that WB wants to bring the Penguin to the big screen.
Variety's Justin Kroll posted:
Take this with a grain of salt as things are constantly changing in the DCEU but I'm hearing the Penguin is possibly the choice to play the main villain in THE BATMAN. Sources add even if Reeves decide to go another route the studio could then make him the main villain in BOP
He then followed this up with a more specific post on where the Penguin lies with both the film's stories. He continues:
Reeves is still working on the script, so that could always change but of the multiple BIRDS OF PREY scripts submitted, one does have the Penguin as the main heavy. Either way, it seems WB wants this character cast in the universe sooner rather then later.
For a while Josh Gad (Frozen) had been lobbying for the role of the Penguin, but after the entire fiasco with Justice League, WB had decided to put a hold on everything to steer the DC ship in the right direction. We don't know if Gad is being considered for the role seriously, but I would want someone older to take on the role as Gad probably won't be that threatening.
How about American Gods' Ian McShane? I also think Peter Dinklage may play a fantastic villain.
For now, it looks like Birds of Prey is the one entering production first, so Matt Reeves should hurry up and decide whether he wants the Penguin in his movie. Hopefully DC doesn't kill off too many of their iconic villains early because there's always something fun about revisiting bad guys.
No release date has been set for Birds of Prey or Batman, but BOP starts shooting early next year.
