Robert Downey Jr. ended his storied tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019 and while the Iron Man actor has clearly moved on from his days as the "genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist" Tony Stark, it can't be denied that fans still want to see him return in some capacity.

Earlier this month, speculation ran high when Marvel Studios made massive changes to the upcoming Armor Wars project, turning it from a Disney+ show to a full-length film. While most of us still know very little about the Don Cheadle-led film other than the fact that it will be loosely based on the iconic Marvel Comics storyline, many believe that the studio's decision to turn it into a film has something to do with Downey possibly coming back as an AI version of Stark.

Now, a new rumor suggests that we'll actually see RDJ in the flesh and it will happen during Phase Six's culmination. According to the oftentimes reliable MyTimeToShineHello, Tony will make his grand MCU comeback in Avengers: Secret Wars which is set to conclude the Multiverse Saga. However, the Twitter tipster didn't specify whether it's the Earth-616 version of the character or just a variant.

Personally, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about RDJ's potential return because it would only cheapen his heroic sacrifice in Endgame. But if it's actually a multiversal counterpart of the defacto leader of the Earth's Mightiest Heroes, then that's a completely different story that I'd be more than willing to give a chance.

Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.
