Robert Downey Jr. Teases His Return as Sherlock Holmes

Robert Downey Jr. may be filling in theater seats as Iron Man today, but not too long ago, he was the face of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes franchise. Downey had been saying for a while that he had wanted to return to the character, and just recently he posted a .gif of himself possibly teasing his reprisal.

Check it out:

If anything, we could be thinking too much into it. Maybe Downey just enjoyed the expression on his face and decided to share, but then again, we've known since May that Sherlock Holmes 3 is slated for a release in 2020, with Downey and Jude Law set to return as the titular detective and Dr. John Watson.

The script will be coming from Hannibal writer Chris Brancato, but we still have no update on whether Guy Ritchie will be coming back to direct. Though I'm all up for a Sherlock 3, I was rather hoping that Ritchie would be tapped to direct Suicide Squad 2 for the DCEU. After all, ensemble criminal films are Ritchie's specialty.

I'm just crossing my fingers that he does this one and then moves on to Suicide Squad 2—that way, everyone's happy.

Sherlock Holmes 3 is expected for a release on Dec. 25, 2020.
